What is Text Neck

What is text neck? It is another modern day 21st Century ailment afflicting the lives of a tech hungry generation. Text neck is sustained by prolonged usage of your smartphone or tablet. It describes pain and injuries bought on by looking down at your device too frequently and for long periods of time. These stances can cause symptoms and discomfort and in some cases more chronic long term pain.

The pain is localised generally in the upper back and presenting as an ache, soreness, discomfort or muscle spasm. It could be a sharp pain in the upper or cervical back or shoulder pain in some cases or just a dull ache or headaches.

A recent study by IDC in association with Facebook shows that “79% of the population between the ages 18 and 44 have their cell phones with them almost all the time—with only 2 hours of their waking day spent without their cell phone on hand.

How to Avoid Text Neck

Firstly and most importantly, prevention is the most obvious way to avoid text neck. Hold your phone or tablet at eye level instead of straining forward or leaning over it. Take frequent breaks form these addictive tools. Finally if you are desk bound then adjust your chair and screen to the correct alignment so your head is positioned correctly and there is no strain on your upper spine. Try to become aware of your posture throughout the day to avoid excessive strain.

How is Text Neck Treated

Strengthening exercises are recommended and perhaps in some cases a short course of chiropractic treatment will be effective at relieving the symptoms. Coupled with adjustments to lifestyle and changing embedded habits then the condition could be easily alleviated and avoided.
